Frequently Asked Questions

How do I import files?

Drag and drop video or audio files directly into the SDUtility window, or use File → Import to browse. Supported formats include MP4, MOV, M4V, and any format supported by AVFoundation.

How does silence detection work?

Click the "Process" button after importing your clips. SDUtility analyzes the audio waveform using vDSP-accelerated RMS analysis, identifies silent regions below your chosen threshold, and marks them visually in the sidecar track. You can then adjust the threshold and minimum duration sliders to fine-tune detection in real time — no re-processing needed.

What export formats are supported?

SDUtility supports six export formats: Lossless Passthrough (direct copy), ProRes 422 HQ, H.264, HEVC (H.265), FCPXML for Final Cut Pro, and FCPXML for DaVinci Resolve. You can select multiple formats and export them all at once.

Can I use SDUtility just to join clips without silence detection?

Yes. Simply import your clips, arrange them in the timeline, and export. You do not need to run the Process step. SDUtility handles clips with different resolutions and frame rates seamlessly.

Does SDUtility upload my files anywhere?

No. All processing happens locally on your Mac. SDUtility makes no network connections and requires no account or login. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How do I edit silence regions?

Toggle the sidecar track (View → Show Silence Track or press the shortcut). Silence regions appear as red overlays on the waveform. Drag the edges of any region to adjust its boundaries frame-by-frame, or use keyboard shortcuts to navigate between regions.

What silence export modes are available?

Three modes: "Silence Removed" cuts out all detected silence, "Silence as Gaps" replaces silence with empty gaps, and "Silence as Clips" keeps the silent sections as separate clips in your timeline.
